Telogen Effluvium

Stress and Hair Loss: Understanding Telogen Effluvium

Daily stress is a fact of life. But did you know it can also contribute to hair loss? Telogen effluvium is a temporary hair-thinning condition triggered by stress or other disruptions in the hair growth cycle.

What is Telogen Effluvium?

Hair goes through a natural cycle of growth, resting, and shedding. Telogen effluvium occurs when a stressful event pushes a large number of hair follicles prematurely into the resting phase. This leads to increased hair shedding, often noticeable 2-3 months after the stressor.

Causes of Telogen Effluvium:

    • Stress: Physical or emotional stress can disrupt the hair cycle.
    • Medical Conditions: Childbirth, severe illness, high fevers, thyroid problems, and some medications can trigger hair loss.
    • Dietary Deficiencies: Lack of essential nutrients can impact hair health.

Symptoms of Telogen Effluvium:

    • Increased hair shedding, particularly noticeable during combing or washing.
    • Thinning hair, often diffuse across the scalp.

Chronic Telogen Effluvium:

This condition, primarily affecting women with previously thick hair, can be more subtle. While shedding might be significant, it’s less noticeable due to overall hair density.

Treatment and Prognosis:

The good news: Telogen effluvium is usually temporary. Once the stressor is eliminated, shedding typically slows down or stops within 6-8 months. In most cases, treatment isn’t necessary. Hair loss signifies new hair growth pushing out the old.

However, if you suspect medication, a nutritional deficiency, or underlying health issues are contributing to hair loss, consult a doctor for diagnosis and treatment options.
